I actually had an very old Okinawan gentleman come up to me while I was there, ask “you American GI?” and I hesitated – not sure if I should answer in the affirmative. After what seemed minutes, but was probably only half a second, I said yes. He then proceeded to bow repeatedly, saying over and over “Thank you”. I cried then, and it still tears me up now to remember it.<br /><br />The Okinawa Peace Memorial has rows of stone walls with the name of every single person who died – no matter who they were, civilian or military, no matter their rank, and no matter their country. Over 240,000 names.
